John Devoy (centre) at Croke Park in 1919. Devoy spent his life committed to the Irish Independence movement. Following an amnesty agreement in 1871, Devoy left for America where he became a journalist for the New York Herald. From American Devoy would help further Irish Independence by founding the Land League with Michael Davitt and the American Irish Historical Society with Theodore Roosevelt.
